In today’s data-driven world, businesses are generating massive amounts of data at an unprecedented rate. However, simply having access to this data is not enough. To stay competitive, businesses need to effectively harness and analyze this data to uncover valuable insights that can drive decision-making, improve operations, and create new opportunities. This is where Big Data Analytics comes into play.

What is Big Data Analytics?

Big Data Analytics refers to the process of examining large and complex data sets to uncover hidden patterns, correlations, trends, and other insights that can inform business decisions. This analysis goes beyond traditional data processing tools and requires advanced techniques and technologies to handle the sheer volume, velocity, and variety of data.

The ultimate goal of Big Data Analytics is to transform raw data into actionable insights that can lead to better business outcomes. Whether it’s improving customer experiences, optimizing supply chains, or predicting market trends, Big Data Analytics provides the tools and methodologies needed to make sense of vast amounts of information.

The 5 V’s of Big Data

To fully understand the scope and potential of Big Data Analytics, it’s important to consider the five key characteristics of big data, often referred to as the 5 V’s:

  1. Volume: The sheer amount of data generated and collected is enormous. Businesses must deal with terabytes, petabytes, or even exabytes of data.
  2. Velocity: Data is generated at a rapid pace. Whether it’s real-time social media updates, live streaming, or transactional data, businesses need to process and analyze data as it arrives.
  3. Variety: Data comes in various formats, including structured data (like databases), unstructured data (such as text, images, and videos), and semi-structured data (like JSON or XML files).
  4. Veracity: The accuracy and reliability of data are crucial. Ensuring data quality and dealing with inconsistencies, noise, and bias are key challenges in Big Data Analytics.
  5. Value: The ultimate goal is to extract meaningful insights that provide real business value. Without the ability to derive value from the data, the other four V’s are irrelevant.

Key Technologies and Techniques in Big Data Analytics

Big Data Analytics relies on a combination of technologies and techniques to process and analyze data. Here are some of the most important components:

  1. Data Warehousing: Centralized repositories store vast amounts of data from different sources. Data warehouses are optimized for querying and analysis, making them a critical part of the Big Data ecosystem.
  2. Hadoop and Distributed Computing: Apache Hadoop is an open-source framework that allows for the distributed processing of large data sets across clusters of computers. Its ability to scale out and process data in parallel makes it a cornerstone of Big Data Analytics.

A critique on Transformative Power of AI in Digital Transformation

In my previous post, we got to explore Artificial Intelligence (A.I) as one of the aspects of technology that is currently evolving and enhancing the digital transformation process of businesses.

We also got to see the level of impact AI has on organizations that seek to improve on some of the 7 Ps (i.e. Product, People, Place, Price, Process, Promotion, Physical Evidence) and other business strategies necessary to achieve their objectives and missions. From transforming customer experiences, expanding sales opportunities all the way through to facilitating real-time decision making processes. And it does not even end there, AI’s massive contribution, especially with its integration with other emerging technologies like blockchain, cloud computing, virtual and augmented realities, thus, further ramping up its disruptive potential to revolutionize societies and globalize digital transformation.

In today’s segment, we now get to place the concept of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) and it’s impact on the stage were we could really examine it from different perspectives. The impact of AI in the digital sector has been a debatable topic, with advocates and critics presenting contrasting perspectives on its implications.

Here, we look a journal article titled “Artificial Intelligence as the core technology for the Digital Transformation process” available on IEEE. This article, written by 2 scholars, (Hajishirzi & Costa, 2021) , The article discusses the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a core technology in the digital transformation (DT) process. It emphasizes how AI can enhance customer experiences, drive organizational change, and create value for businesses. The research identifies barriers to AI adoption and highlights the importance of organizational culture and leadership in successfully navigating digital transformation.

Like the description of the article in question, the authors adopted a more qualitative approach in their research on the above topic, utilizing a literature review methodology to analyze the impact of AI on digital transformation. Although the “how” on methodology may not be clearly described, the authors begin to set preambles on the core concepts and then takes its readers on a journey on AI’s contribution towards digital transformation, with each section or point being enriched with content on similar research and works done by other researchers and scholars alike. The content of article largely focuses on the positive aspects AI’s impact could be felt in the corporate sector, highlighting Design Thinking, Customer Journey and Business Transformation. The analyses would not have been a well-rounded one if the authors had not included the challenges or negative impacts of AI in digital transformation. In fact, a tabular matrix of AI’s positive and negative impact has been defined in the article against the following sectors; Health Care, Customer Services, Transportation and Logistics, Education, Environmental related services, Retail and Financial services. Such analysis helps point out some trade-offs AI brings along.

The article seems well prepared and structured which supports the research topic. Hajishirzi and Costa (Hajishirzi & Costa, 2021), really did well by clearly defining core concepts such as digital transformation and Artificial Intelligence, two buzz words in the digital world may sound so “far-fetched” to people with little tech knowledge.

It is also rich in insights, views and perspectives from the works made by other researchers that was used to support the authors’ original arguments in the article. It however, has little diagrams and other illustrations to help support their research. It is notable, that the authors used real-world case studies about digital transformation with AI one of which Coca-Cola used AI algorithms and big-data to aid the company make actionable decisions on the best approaches to improve customer service delivery. Overall, the article has good quality presentation.

Ladies and gentlemen, that was quite the unpacking we have done today. We took an interesting dive in this article where we see the impact AI has when it becomes one of the key factors of digital transformation.

A Reflection on The Transformative Power of AI in Digital Transformation

Wow!!! What a journey. From previous posts, we were able to witness the great impact Artificial Intelligence (AI) has as a contributory factor to digital transformation. We even took it a step further to unpack by critiquing an article named “Artificial Intelligence as the Core Technology for the Digital Transformation Process” from our very own What the Paper Says segment. This well-rounded journal article by Reihaneh Hajishirzi and Carlos J. Costa that vividly describes Artificial Intelligence and the impact (Both negative and positive impact) it has on digital transformation across several sectors. Enriched with a good amount of academic literature from other scholars and researchers as well as real-world case studies of how AI is applied to several business processes yielding positive results.

From what we have witnessed over the past years, it would seem like AI is slowly and naturally becoming a household name in the digital world. What started as simple learning models still under study has recently gained incredible traction in the last quarter of 2022 with the release of ChatGPT (Naughton, 2023).

One of the key aspects of AI we will be looking at for this post is generative AI. According to (Lawton, 2024), generative AI is a term used to describe “… a type of artificial intelligence technology that can produce various types of content, including text, imagery, audio, and synthetic data”. For this type of AI to work, it needs to be fed with some data or content that is put together as prompts. Based on the learning models, trainers, and algorithms available, the AI produces a response to the requested prompt. Along with its nature to continuously learn from previous prompts in either current or previous sessions grants generative AI to have human-like conversations with a person constantly issuing prompts to it.

With this principle, generative AI could be used in a wide range of real-world applications for individuals and businesses. One daily application of generative AI for businesses is in the field of customer services. Over time, small businesses or startups experience breakthroughs in the sale of a niche product and they begin to expand operations. Creating branches and building a more serious and interactive online presence to cover a wider target audience. It is one thing for a business to find a new set of customers to buy your products the first time, and to be keeping them (buying more of your product for a much longer time) is a whole different thing altogether.

This is where generative AI shines in the area of customer services and customer relationship management. Chatbots have been widely used as an effective tool to interact with customers and other key stakeholders of the business. The effectiveness of these applications largely depends on the data that is currently fed, the type of algorithms used, and the length of time these applications have learned from said data. With the right combinations of the above parameters, businesses tend to perform a lot better at customer loyalty compared with other businesses that may not be using generative AI or traditional customer services/relationship management simply because of the fast nature the AI responds to both regular and unique inquiries dished out by consumers daily.

Even though things may be of great benefit to businesses, it does come with its set of concerns. (Douali et al., 2022) highlighted job displacement, privacy and security breaches, and algorithmic bias as some of the negative consequences of AI. They contend that the widespread adoption of AI could lead to the loss of numerous jobs, particularly in sectors like manufacturing, where automation is expected to have a significant impact.

The debate surrounding AI’s impact on the digital sector is complex and multifaceted. It is however very difficult to ignore its capabilities, recognizing the benefits of AI, such as its ability to solve complex problems and increase convenience it is quite evident that the direction technology is heading for the future is towards AI.

To my lovely readers, AI could be the best (or worst) possible invention technology has brought to humanity depending on how we look at it. Let’s give ourselves a few years to come to witness the wonders and enhancements this is going to pose as we continue to evolve gradually towards a more advanced and automated digital life.
